The Maryland Thoracic Society (MTS) is the medical branch of the American Lung Association of Maryland and the local chapter of the American Thoracic Society. The MTS is a professional organization dedicated to all aspects of lung disease with special attention given to research, continuing medical education, and clinical practice. Members include physicians, scientists, and other highly qualified health professionals.
MTS members work closely with the ALAM through volunteering to serve on ALAM or MTS committees, providing the medical leadership and expertise needed for planning the MTS annual continuing education program, reviewing and selecting research award applications for funding, raising funds for research, providing testimony before legislature, serving as spokesperson for the media, and speaking at community events.
The membership categories include:
- Active Membership: Open to all individuals with an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree. The requirement of a doctoral degree may be waived for persons engaged in scientific and health fields closely related to MTS activities. Non-doctoral applicants should be highly qualified individuals who have made a distinct contribution to lung disease in research, teaching or clinical practice.
- Affiliate Membership: Open to nurses and other highly qualified personnel who have had major involvement in lung disease teaching, clinical practice or research. The minimum requirements for non-doctoral applicants include licensure in respective professional field and an interest in lung disease.
