What should I know about air quality and how it affects my health?   top
There are a number of air quality issues, both indoor and outdoor, that can affect your health. Click here to find out more about air quality and air pollution.

:: Donations and Other Support
How can I make a donation?    top
There are many ways to donate to the American Lung Association of Maryland: Christmas Seals, tributes, events, bequests and trusts, special gifts, research endowment campaign, property donations, and matching gifts.

Where does the money go?   top
Your gift to the American Lung Association of Maryland supports Maryland programs to make a difference in the lives of your family, friends, and community. Your donation will fight lung disease by helping people quit smoking, funding research, improving indoor and outdoor air quality, and educating millions about asthma.

Where does your funding come from?    top
We are funded 40% by individual donations, through personal gifts, memorial donations, direct mail campaigns, event sponsorship, and vehicle donations. We also receive funding through Combined Health Charities of Maryland and various local and national grants and foundations.

How much of the money stays in Maryland?  top
Eighty-seven percent of donations stay in the State of Maryland to help educate, support and protect Marylanders' lungs. We send 13 percent of Maryland donations to the National American Lung Association to fund national publicity, advocacy efforts, and research.

How much of your funding is spent on programs?   top
We maintain one of the lowest overhead rates in the non-profit sector. Nearly 80 percent of our funding goes directly to programming. That means that about $.79 of every dollar donated goes to help people breathe easier. This graph shows how a dollar is spent in our organization.

How can I volunteer at the American Lung Association of Maryland?    top
As a volunteer for the American Lung Association of Maryland, you can make a difference. You can teach children how to avoid asthma attacks, educate youngsters about the dangers of tobacco, help people understand the health effects of air pollution, or lend a hand at one of our bike tours or other fundraising events to raise money for lung disease research and programs.

Volunteers help us all breathe easier!

Ongoing volunteer needs include:
Administrative: We often find ourselves in need of someone to fulfill literature requests, maintain databases, do mailings for special events, and other general clerical activities.

Special Events: Our cycling events, comedy night, and asthma walks depend on volunteers to help with planning and provide support for the event.

Health Fairs: Numerous health fairs are held in the community year-round. Volunteers help us out with these by staffing our display and representing our association.

Media Outreach: The Lung Association is a major source of information for radio, TV and newspaper reporters. We are looking for respiratory therapists, school nurses, pulmonary physicians, and people with lung disease to share their experiences.

Advocacy: The Lung Association maintains a database of concerned citizens who want to know about issues that affect lung health. Members of this database can help make a difference by contacting governmental departments and the press.

Check out other pages on our website for more details on programs and events, and email us at volunteer@marylandlung.org about any of the above volunteer opportunities or other ideas on how you'd like to help.
