:: Mission
The American Lung Association of Maryland was established in 1919 as the Maryland Tuberculosis Association. Although the focus of the Association has changed since a cure for TB was found, we remain constant in working toward our mission – to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. Lung disease, including asthma, emphysema and lung cancer, is the third leading cause of death in America and affects more than 600,000 Marylanders.

:: Services
The American Lung Association of Maryland is an acknowledged authority in the areas of asthma, tobacco use prevention and cessation, and air quality, both indoors and outdoors. We also fund local researchers and other medical professionals who search for better treatments, prevention and cures for lung disease.

:: Volunteers
Volunteers are a critical component of our organization. Without their help, our staff of 25 would be unable to do the work they do – helping children with asthma learn to breathe easier; providing smokers with the resources to quit smoking; fighting for cleaner air in our state. Last year, we had almost 1500 volunteers give their time to our cause.

The American Lung Associations of Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina merged on July 1, 2007 to become the American Lung Association of the Atlantic Coast, Inc. (ALAAC).  While our organizations have merged, we will continue to do business under the names American Lung Association of Maryland, American Lung Association of Virginia and American Lung Association of North Carolina.  This move follows a trend to have the state Lung Associations create regional entities to maximize resources and make the organization more effective and efficient.  There will be no interruption in the programs we offer or the services we provide and in fact, some new programs will be launched or expanded as a result of the merger.

Melina Davis-Martin took the helm as President and CEO of the ALAAC in September following five years as President of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society of Central Virginia Chapter located in Richmond.

A regional board of directors was named that includes representatives from the three states as listed below.  Local leadership boards will provide guidance to each respective state.

The American Lung Association of the Atlantic Coast, Inc. will maintain local offices operating throughout Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina.
